Lokashakti (ˈlo.kə.ʃʌk.ti) is something I've been working on formally since the late 2000s. The name means power of the people in Hindi, and as originally intended the concept was twofold:

  1. Lokashakti Inc. is a nonprofit organization incorporated in the state of New York in 2009. Leveraging my experience with organizations such as the Albert Einstein Institution, the Peace Abbey, and the New York Catholic Worker, I wanted to create a means by which people could more easily plug into local protest movements. From 2010 - 2013 and thanks to the help of countless volunteer hours, we created a prototype online hub to help unify disparate groups around the globe working for peace and social justice. Faced with a lack of funding in 2013, the project was put on hold while I pursued a PhD. See some of what we were able to create at www.lokashakti.org, including: the Lokashakti Library, the Lokashakti Encyclopedia, and the Lokashakti Quotes Archive.
  2. Lokashakti is also a musical entity developed to play protest music, broadly defined. In 2010 we released a three-song EP on our own record label, Lokashakti Records, and although we've been on hiatus for quite some time, in some sense the political atmosphere in recent years has never been more susceptible to the influence of socially conscious songwriting. Look out for more music soon, and definitely visit our website in the meantime: www.lokashaktimusic.org.
